And the Winner is..........

"Grandma Young's Baking Contest" was all about brownies at this year's family reunion. It was a "fierce" competition with Lydia being among the top 3 finalist. But the coveted "Golden Spatula Award" left our immediate family (we are usually the winners) and the spatula is traveling to Oregon this year.

Here's Lydia's recipe:

Brownie Swirl Peanut Butter Cups

Proverbs 25:11
A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.

Thank you to the dear people who sent me kind emails, cards and letters. You have been examples of gracious encouragers.

Searching for a Reason to Blog

My grandmother checked my blog regularly- that is, my aunt checked my blog and gave the information to my grandmother. Being aware of the fact that my grandmother wanted to know what was going on in my life, kept me posting those seemingly insignificant happenings of my household. One of the tenants of grand parenting is that no information about a grandchild is too mundane. Every aspect of my life, from the books I read, to the poetry I liked, to the field trip our family took, was of interest.

Now I'm back home, resuming those seemingly insignificant happenings that my grandmother enjoyed sharing from afar. The loss of my grandmother has resulted in a sad void. I am hoping to find a reason to blog again.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18
For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.
For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;
While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

Taking a Bloggie Break

I'll be out of town as I go to celebrate the homegoing of my dear grandmother. If you think to, please pray for traveling mercies and strength for my family during this sad time.

A New Breakfast Recipe

I tried a new recipe "Raised Waffles" posted on Pleasant View Schoolhouse. The recipe is mixed the night before and can be cooked in the morning by each person when they are ready for breakfast. (That is how things are working out this summer in our busy household) Give them a try. They are delicious!

24 Years Ago......

...... my sister wore this dress in my wedding (June 16th). It isn't purple, it's lavender. It isn't a clown collar, it's...... O.K., it's a clown collar. I thought it was very fashionable 24 years ago!

Four Parties in Two Days.......

...... A little much for the holiday weekend? Yes! But a great time of fun with friends.
This is the dish that went to every party and even to church on Sunday (By the way- I didn't take the same beans to every outing. I made separate dishes for each party in case you were wondering.)

The requested recipe:
West Virginia Reunion Beans
1 can lima beans, drained
1 can kidney beans, drained
1 can pork and beans, drained
Brown 1lb. breakfast sausage , 1 large onion (chopped) and 1 green pepper (chopped).
Drain. Add 1 cup ketchup, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and 1 small can tomatoes. Place in crock pot for 4 hours or bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.
(Cindy's note- add more beans to make the recipe go further)

103

As a 1930s wife, I am
Very Superior

Take the test!

A discussion with friends yesterday, regarding our roles as women, reminded me of this poem...

Nightfall

I need so much the quiet of your love

After the day's loud strife;

I need your calm all other things above

After the stress of life.

I crave the haven that in your dear heart lies,

After the toil is done,

I need the star of your heavenly eyes.

After the day's great sun.

This quote by Martha Washington came to me today in a devotional via email. I thought is was worthy of posting.....

"I am still determined to be cheerful and happy in whatever situation I may be, for I have also learned from experience that the greater part of our happiness or misery depends on our dispositions and not on our circumstances."
